I've been coaching people dealing with shyness and social anxiety for several years now. This is the first time I'm mentioning it on SelfImprovemnt but if your social skills are holding you back in life this is the number one thing you can do for yourself.
Shyness and social anxiety are terms given to the same issue that travel along a spectrum. I know people argue over this stuff but at the end of the day what you call it doesn't matter. What you do about it matters.
These days my life is very different compared to when I was in college. I have multiple social circles and I struggle to find a night to just relax by myself. This is a far cry from when I used to watch everbody else living their life.
I was still dealing with social anxiety when I started solo travelling the world full time. If you want to really throw yourself in at the deep end you can do the same - but you really don't have to. In fact, sometimes something like this can make things a hell of a lot worse. I wish I had this book in my hands even a year ago.
Dr. Hendriksen has devoted her career to helping her clients overcome the same obstacles she has. With familiarity, humor, and authority, Dr. Hendriksen takes the reader through the roots of social anxiety and why it endures, how we can rewire our brains through our behavior, and―at long last―exactly how to quiet your Inner Critic, the pesky voice that whispers, "Everyone will judge you." Using her techniques to develop confidence, think through the buzz of anxiety, and feel comfortable in any situation, you can finally be your true, authentic self.
The fact that Amazon give you the audio-book here is a bonus. You can listen to it while in the car or just falling asleep. Personally I like to listen to it a couple of times over to make sure I've really got everything from the book. Sure, you can read it as well but I always feel like I'm being the most productive when I can listen to self improvement stuff while I'd otherwise be wasting time.
